Problem-Based Learning
Students looked at an exponential growth problem, a zombie apocalypse, before any instruction was given. Students look at the number of humans turned into zombies everyday. They quickly realized they were dealing with repeated multiplication. The goal was for students to make a connection between repeated multiplication and exponents to come up with an exponential expression representing the number of humans turned into zombies on any given day. Following the creation of this expression, students were asked to compare the number of humans turned into zombies on various different days using the expression they had created. The goal of this section was to get students thinking about ways to simplify exponential expressions.
Zombie Apocalypse Activity
After completing the in-class activity, students were to finish the packet for homework. The second half of the packet was very similar to the in-class activity except now each zombie was turning three humans into zombies per day as opposed to just two.
