Assessment One
Assessment One required students to take what they had learned from the Zombie Activity and apply it to a scenario when they did not know how many humans were being turned into zombies each day. Student's were still comparing the number of humans turned into zombie's each day but now they were working with variables as opposed to numbers. Those students who had gained a conceptual understanding of exponents were able to apply their knowledge and complete the assessment quickly.
Brian
- Correctly identified the expressions used to represent the number of humans turned into zombies on each day
- Started each comparison by writing out the appropriate expression
- Represented each exponential expression as repeated multiplication and correctly simplified most expressions
- Better conceptual understanding of exponents
- Began using shortcuts to simplify expressions however he subtracted incorrectly on number 3
- Able to complete the bonus section of the assessment as well although he did not see the pattern I was hoping students would see
Jeff
- Correctly wrote out each expression to represent the number of humans turned into zombies on each day
- Set up each comparison correctly but wrote the wrong base down when expressing each exponent as repeated multiplication
- Did not gain a better conceptual understanding from the activity but rather memorized the process we went through and copied it.
- Took much longer to complete the activity and was unable to get to the bonus section
- Consistent with writing out the exponents as repeated multiplication
